Impact Junk Solutions

Began 2012 | Employment Development, Environmental, Revenue Generation for Parent Org, Social

Français

Being a social enterprise means we need to do so much more then just remove junk or clean someone’s space. We need to ensure we are always improving the community around us, and the broader environment. This, in its essence, is what social enterprise is all about.

Community Background

What sets Impact apart is that we only employ people with mental illness. This provides opportunities for marginalized members of our communities, who might otherwise be deemed unemployable, to enter the workforce. In this sense, Impact proves society wrong!

“Working for Impact Junk Solutions has made a big impact on my life. I can be myself here; I don’t have anything to hide. Because of this job, I realize I don’t need to hide my disability. I can come to work every day and be happy instead of dreading coming to work and worrying that someone would find out about my disability.” – Steve Fay, Employee

Outcomes: What We Do

Impact tries to recycle as much of the perceived junk as possible. We will either bring it to a recycling facility in London to ensure that it is diverted from the landfill, or we go a step further. Most of the junk that people throw away isn’t really junk. In fact, many items that people dispose of are still in great shape. Lightly used furniture, for example, can have a second life – so we give it one. We keep this useful “junk” and give it away to people in need in the London Community.

Diverting waste from landfills and repurposing items for people in need are important outcomes at Impact. The core purpose of our social enterprise, however, is to employ people with mental illness so they can get a hand up, not a hand out. We are trying to support people in the most meaningful way possible – through meaningful employment. By providing jobs for people with lived experience of mental illness, we are helping them develop into stronger community members. This is what sets up apart from our competitors, and is what we sell.
