SEonFAQ: Which social and digital strategies can facilitate growth and expand reach for a budding Social Enterprise?

In July, SEontario began a new initiative, our question of the month. It was created to cultivate a sense of community and shared knowledge amongst social enterprises, especially those in Ontario, Canada. Our first question, posed by @MegAtLiteracy on twitter, asked what social and digital strategies could be used to facilitate growth and expand reach for a new social enterprise?

Below you will find the responses, and shared knowledge, from the SE community, across Canada, and the world. To participate in this month’s question of the month, simply tweet at us using the hashtag #SEonFAQ, email us, or fill out our question of the month contact form. We’d love to hear from everyone. Together, with our shared knowledge, we can help SE continue to thrive, and grow. (more…)

Facilitate Reach through Inbound Marketing Strategies

Proven, tried and true, inbound marketing is an effective way to turn strangers into customers. July’s question of the month was provided to SEontario by @MegAtLiteracy. She asks, “Which social and digital strategies can facilitate growth and expand reach for a budding Social Enterprise?”. Furniture Bank (@Furniture_Bank), a nonprofit social enterprise that’s furnishing homes and empowering lives in Ontario, shared their strategy of replacing outbound marketing strategies with inbound marketing strategies through HubSpot‘s automation platform.

Just what is inbound marketing, and how can it help your social enterprise? Traditional marketing, aka outbound marketing, relied on TV advertisements, billboards, flyers/direct mail, to reach potential customers. Today nearly half of all direct mail is never opened, 86% of people skip television advertisements, and 91% of people have unsubscribed from a company mailing list that they previously opted into. Instead of reaching out, inbound marketing is about creating quality content that draws people towards your organization. By creating content that reflects your ideal customers and supporters interests, you attract qualified and interested individuals and keep them coming back for more.

Inbound marketing uses strategies that focus on earning people’s attention and interest. This is often done through various forms of social media (twitter, facebook, instagram, etc), blogging, and podcasts. The content is meant to be engaging and informative, and should help to create a dialogue between your customers/supporters and your organization.

Ontario considers Hybrid Legislation

Social enterprises in Ontario are often falling through the legislative cracks, says Dr. Erik Hoskins.

The Ontario government is considering hybrid legislation for social enterprises, which would allow for private profit while ensuring social good. By creating hybrid legislation Ontario will be joining British Columbia and Nova Scotia in legally recognizing the importance of social enterprise in addressing social and environmental concerns in Canadian communities.

Ontario Minister for Economic Development, Trade and Employment, Dr. Erik Hoskins, states that:

“One of the challenges that social enterprises have faced here in Ontario – and it’s not unlike that in the UK – is that social enterprises fall between the cracks or there isn’t legislation that applies specifically to them so we are looking at the possibility of hybrid legislation in Ontario, which would allow them to have shared equity and to provide them with greater financing opportunities, as well as make it clearer where they fall legislatively”

The proposed hybrid legislation will be based on similar UK legislation that is already in practice. It will focus on supporting the creation of business with features of both profit and nonprofit corporations. Currently the Federal Government is asking for comments about amending their Business corporation to allow the same changes.

To get involved in this process join The Ontario Nonprofit Network [ONN] May 5th at 12pm – 1pm, for a free webinar.

The webinar will provide a briefing of the hybrid models under discussion and seek participants’ feedback and comments. ONN is also looking to hear from participants about the regulatory and legislative changes they need for their social enterprise work within charities and nonprofits.
